OPINEL
French knife maker since 1890
Who doesn't know Opinel? The famous pocket knife born in the Alps in 1890 is still made in Savoie by the Opinel family. A simple, clever and durable knife handed down from generation to generation. Today, it is the inspiring soul of a large collection of knives, tools and accessories for the kitchen, the table, the garden and more.
In 1890 Joseph Opinel worked in the family workshop in Albiez-le-Vieux, in the French Alps, and invented the pocket knife that bears his name today. Very quickly, his knives equipped with a wooden handle and a blade with an incomparable edge, were a great success...
Still manufactured in the heart of the French Alps in Savoie, according to the original principles but with modern techniques using skilfully-developed industrial equipment, the Opinel pocket knife has remained the same as it always has been. Simple, durable and smart, it is the indispensable companion that is given and passed on down generations.
Unique and timeless, it has become a familiar object that crosses the centuries and generations from pocket to pocket. Loved by the greatest artists (Picasso used to sculpt his figurines with an Opinel No. 05, Paul Bocuse always carried one in his pocket) and great adventurers, the Opinel has become a design icon and an object of French heritage, without losing any of its simplicity.
Today, Opinel celebrates the French art of living by offering other lines of knives, tools and accessories for the kitchen, the dining table, the garden, DIY, outdoor activities... Opinel is synonymous with the right balance between design and authenticity, the attachment to ancestral know-how and the desire to always offer the tool best suited to the purpose. The company is managed by the descendants of Joseph Opinel, still based in Savoie, and today employs over 150 people. It is committed to a production process that respects natural resources.
