French tableware trends for autumn 2024
Mix & match
The first days of autumn are here, and the new collections from French tableware brands are making their mark with free and decorative styles. They bring a multitude of unbridled motifs that create an almost accidental harmony. During this ode to the changing seasons, the plant kingdom comes into the limelight. Lush friezes splash onto tableware with an assortment of joyful shapes and colours.
When life imitates nature
The autumn palette matches the fading hues spotted in countryside gardens at this time. Yellowish green and faded purple are embellished with touches of reddish-brown and enhanced with pure green. Green is all around, in varying degrees of softness and depth.
At Dior, Astier de Villatte, Degrenne and Popolo, green and purple blend harmoniously in figurative motifs that recall ancient drawings by botanists: aubergines, artichokes, ripe figs and flowers.
Organic textures
The controlled use of slip and natural ceramics gives these collections a refined, earthy feel. These authentic materials forge a connection between the artisan and nature itself, between humans and plants.
Inspired by vegetable gardens, textured and irregular contours are characteristic of the plate collections at Gien, Cécile Gasc and La Romaine Éditions, and the cutlery sets at Claude Dozorme and Alain Saint Joanis. When texture isn’t used on the surface, it blends into the pieces, as in the spectacular, tone-on-tone plant imprints at Maison Vessel.
Uninhibited freedom in shapes and associations
The autumn equinox makes opposites attract: this season, tableware is going for bold with the most daring shapes and associations.
Perfectly pitched rustic jugs, bowls and basins (Montgolfier, JL Coquet) rub shoulders with their chiselled counterparts enhanced in the form of transparent glassware in straw and plum tones (Luminarc, La Rochère). These incredible creations owe much to the splendour of hand-painted artisanal friezes, from the Marie Daâge dinner services to plates with eastern appeal by Haviland. Wooden handles by Opinel, Au Nain Coutelier and Forge de Laguiole add a promising use of texture to this unique balance.
Autumn 2024 brings a wave of creative renewal from French tableware brands, with decoration being the watchword this season. It’s an invitation to draw inspiration from nature and cultivate a spirit of freedom, in which assortments of patterns conjure up a new casual chic aesthetic.
